Yamaha Tilt Trim Motor Assy For Yamaha Outboards

The ability to tilt the engine for a variety of reasons — improving fuel economy, raising it during trailering, etc. — is one of the features that boat owners most appreciate. So, it's a bummer when the system fails. This article offers some tips that can help troubleshoot the problem and point you in the right direction for repairs or replacement.

Tip 1: Attempting to raise or lower the motor and hearing nothing happens is a pretty good indication that there's an electrical issue between the control switch and either the solenoid or start relay. Disconnect the quick-disconnect plug (if equipped) or detach the two wires and apply 12 volts directly to the motor's blue and green power leads. Energizing the blue wire raises the motor; energizing the green one lowers it.

If the motor operates but won't stay in the raised position, slips down when lowered or won't operate at all, there's likely an issue with the hydraulic pump or valve body assembly. Check the hydraulic fluid level and look for signs of leakage around the piston assembly.
